JOB TITLE: Associate – 3 to 5 PQE

HOURS: Full-time, 9:30am – 5:30pm, Monday to Friday with one hour for lunch. A flexible approach to working hours is a must, overtime may be required at busy times.
We currently operate a hybrid working policy with at least 3 days office working per week. Our hybrid working policy is discretionary and may be subject to change.

ABOUT THE TEAM
The Data team at Sheridans consists of 3 partners and 6 associates, supported by 3 personal assistants.
Data is a valuable and important asset. It is, however, often mismanaged. Sheridans’ data team work with clients to protect and exploit these assets, creating and protecting revenue streams and allowing brands to maximise growth.
The majority of the team are based in London but one partner in the team is currently located in Berlin, Germany and has been instrumental in the development and opening of the Sheridans German office, which has taken place in recent years.
More broadly, the team has specialist expertise within IT and technology law, covering:
- Software & Digital Services: Comprehensive advice on software licensing, SaaS, development, hosting, and maintenance.
- Data Protection & Cyber Risk: Specialisation in data protection law, ePrivacy, data strategy, and managing cyber risks.
- Emerging Technologies: In-depth knowledge of cryptocurrency, blockchain, and innovative data solutions.
- Industry Focus: Tailored support for media, technology, advertising, and creative industries.
- Commercial: Guidance on all aspects of commercial law for both mature companies and start-ups.
Their combined skills ensure clients receive expert advice on navigating the complexities of modern technology and data-driven environments. The team also provides commercial contract advice within the technology sector.
ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY
We are seeking an Associate with 3 to 5 years of post-qualification experience. The successful individual will have interest and experience in a broad range of data protection and commercial matters, including compliance with the UK GDPR. This role is a perfect opportunity for an individual looking to develop and grow within an established and specialised team.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Drafting of agreements and legal documents
- Assessing clients’ data uses and respective impact on and respective impact on privacy
- Advising clients
- Negotiating with counterparts
- Marketing and business development

SKILLS, EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS
The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate the following skills and experience or be motivated to develop those skills and experience:
Skills & experience
- Experience of:
a) software licensing, including software as a service and on premises contracts
b) distribution, reselling and agency agreements
c) software development, maintenance and support agreements
d) end user licences and consumer terms
e) open source licensing
- Experience of working on GDPR and privacy projects, including notices, processing and transfer agreements, impact assessments, internal policies and cybersecurity
- Experience of working in the areas AI and adtech
- Experience of working in the areas of regulation relating to consumer contracts, eprivacy and advertising
- Commercial awareness and negotiating skills
- Interpersonal skills, to work as part of a team or with other people and organisations
- A professional approach to work, integrity and a respect for confidentiality
- A methodical approach to work with a strong focus on accuracy
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with experience of liaising with senior internal stakeholders and clients
- Enthusiasm and resilience, with an excellent client service ethic
- Ability to liaise with, persuade and influence colleagues and clients at all levels

Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or higher from a well-regarded university
- For German based candidates – qualified as a lawyer in Germany or another European jurisdiction or before the New York or California bar (USA).
